Early Foundations & First Artistic Sparks

Jan Christopher Heßling’s musical path began in 2010 at the Kamp-Lintfort School of Music (near Düsseldorf, Germany), where the guidance of Babette Scholz and Martin Begall shaped his earliest artistic impulses.

Under their attentive mentorship, he discovered a deep affinity for the classical guitar and laid the technical foundations that would support his later development. Even as a boy, he stepped confidently onto competitive stages, earning a succession of distinctions at “Jugend musiziert.”

After multiple first prizes at regional and state levels, he reached a defining milestone in 2018: a 2nd national prize in the solo category at the final round in Lübeck — the temporary summit of his youth career.

A Breakthrough Year: The Orchestra Debut

That same year marked a turning point in his emergence as a soloist. Winning the “Bühne frei” competition of the Niederrheinische Musikschule granted him the rare privilege of performing with a professional orchestra.

Together with the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker under GMD Mihkel Kütson, he appeared at the Seidenweberhaus in Krefeld, the Theater Mönchengladbach, and at the “Kamper Nacht” in the Kamper Baroque Garden. The experience — performing Vivaldi’s Lute Concerto in D and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez — affirmed his resolve to place music at the center of his life.

Emergence on the International Stage

In the years that followed, Heßling extended his artistic reach beyond national borders. In 2019, he received an outstanding 2nd prize at the 14th Anna Amalia Competition for Young Guitarists in Weimar, drawing particular notice for presenting his own compositions, including his Prelude and Fugue in D.

Shortly thereafter, he proved his poise and technical acuity as a semifinalist in the 2020 Koblenz International Guitar Competition, held digitally due to global circumstances.

A New Chapter at Folkwang University

The beginning of his studies at the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen opened a new chapter. Under Prof. Tomasz Zawierucha, Heßling refined his interpretive voice and immersed himself in the breadth of musical history as well as contemporary currents.

His fascination with the dialogue between tradition and modernity found striking expression in 2024 with the premiere of his work fuga, presented in Essen as part of a composition project opposing the war in Ukraine.

Masterclasses & Artistic Refinement

During his time at Folkwang, he enriched his artistic vocabulary through masterclasses with distinguished musicians, among them Prof. Dale Kavanagh (CA), Prof. Philippe Villa (FR), Andrzej Olewiński (PL), Prof. Dr. Steven Goss (GB), Prof. Andreas von Wangenheim (CH), Katrin Klingeberg, Prof. Thomas Müller-Pering, and Prof. Thomas Offermann.

Chamber Music Encounters & Artistic Maturity

A series of chamber music projects followed, including collaborations with Midori Seiler (violin) and Maurice Steger (flute). Today, Heßling is regarded as one of the most promising talents of his generation in Germany.

As a laureate of the NRW Guitar Prize 2025, he appeared throughout the region in early 2026 as part of the “Festival on Tour.” His performances — for instance at Kloster Saarn or the Everding Center in Bottrop — reveal an artist whose musical personality has reached a compelling maturity.

A Promising Voice of His Generation

Alongside his concert engagements, he taught at the Musik & Sprech Akademie in Essen until mid‑2026, shaping the next generation of young guitarists. His playing — often praised for its clarity, emotional depth, and finely sculpted sound — remains guided by an unceasing search for new expressive possibilities.
